By Clara Padilla Staff Writer Even though the Teachers CTU strike happened during the Cross Country season, Mr. Shunt, the coach for the Boys Cross Country Team, stated how his runners still managed to make amazing improvements and times. Did the CTU strike have any effect over the season? “It did, because the runners had to practice on their own without the coaches. Luckily that was our weekend off so we didn’t miss any meets." Do you coach both the boys and the girls’ team? “No, I only coach the guy’s team." Who do you think improved the most from beginning to end of the season? “Manuel Lule and Felix Vazquez both made surprising improvements. After being on the team for two years, Manuel Lule is the fastest runner.” Any seniors that might run cross country in college? “Four seniors that might potentially run at college level would be Luis Reyes, Felix Vazquez, Manuel Lule, and Ricardo Robles. I hope if they run in college; they can use that to benefit their academics.” How many meets are in a Cross Country season? “There are usually eight meets. They start from 6:30am to 12:30pm. ”What place did the team finish in this season? “This season, the boys varsity finished in seventh place, four points away from sixth place. This was the first time ever that our runners finished in under seventeen minutes.” Did Cross Country run outside of Chicago? “Cross Country traveled as far as Aurora for the Cadet Invite.” How many students are on the team? “About twenty runners.” When does the season start and end? “The season starts in summer running camp in June and they have their first meet at the end of August. The season ended October 13, 2012 with the city championship.”
